I said good-bye to a long time friend today.
Don lived a very full, adventurous 88 years. He was the most memorable character of my life time.
For many years, Don was the steel guitar player in my country band. He was, in my opinion, the best steel guitar player in the region. But his musical talent was only a part of his many abilities.
I certainly remember his temper. He could display it in an instant, but his smile and laugh was much more frequent. I can hear him laugh even now.
He was ALWAYS up for mischief or a crazy adventure. I could tell many tales of our times together, but I think they are better just left in my treasured memories. Don was also a very caring person. During a particularly dark period of my life, it was Don Willey who probably prayed for me more than anyone I knew. He was a dear and valued friend.
One story I will share is from several years ago. Don was struggling with a very serious illness. Honestly, I don’t even recall what it was, but I remember clearly the email he sent to me late one night when he thought he might not live until morning. “If I don’t make it through, and find myself in Heaven before morning, I will ask God for some outlandish favors for you.”
That was Don Willey.
So long for now, old friend. I’ll be seeing you again, sometime soon.
