Comedian Bill Cosby is not exactly the poster boy for gun rights!
In a recent interview, he had this to say about the Trevon Martin shooting:
“When a person has a gun, sometimes their mind clicks, that this thing will win arguments and straighten people out This “thing” (the gun)… we need to get rid of it on the streets… and if people have one they should be checked out so thoroughly”
Taking a closer look at his comments, it is easy to conclude that while he might not be advocating the TOTAL elimination of gun rights, he is building a subtle argument for stronger laws that would restrict gun owners.
Let’s first give him some personal slack. His son was shot and killed by a Russian thug. That is enough pain to last a lifetime, and certainly would impact personal views on guns for some people.
That said, let’s bring the issue back into focus. Should we say it would have been better in this case for Zimmerman to have been killed by having his head smashed against the sidewalk? We obviously don’t know all the details of this encounter.
The challenge being made, however, is that guns should be seriously restricted so we could “avoid” this kind of incident.
Sorry Bill, but the reality check here is… when gun ownership is restricted only criminals have guns. Law abiding citizens are always the losers. When government controls gun ownership the government controls the people rather than the people controlling their government.
Responsible gun owners PREVENT crime and protect people. CRIMINALS misuse guns and hurt people… UNLESS a responsible gun owner is there to STOP them.
